Act 1 - Live Your Purpose
The first and most important action
toward experiencing Total Success
in your life is to Live
Your Purpose. Living Your Purpose is also the
highest expression of Honoring Your
Inner Guidance. Each family, business,
organization, government, community and society must also have a
clear, empowering purpose not only to survive but also to
flourish. Another name for purpose in this context is the
concept of "vision." Purpose is important to the
larger scale of life on this planet and is really the cumulative
effect of all purpose and action on the personal scale.
Therefore, my primary focus in this Book
is your personal purpose which must be clear and
empowering first!
Living
Your Purpose is really a goal, requiring
all the same steps for realizing it as any other goal.
However, Living Your
Purpose is such an important goal that it needs
the special attention and treatment in this section of this Book.
Each person is special, endowed with gifts
unique to that person alone. And each one of us is on this
planet to express, experience and prosper from our own
uniqueness. Living
Your Purpose is about enjoying life, about having
fun and feeling satisfied on all levels. What creates
satisfaction is different for different people, but it is always
something empowering that we enjoy having, doing or being right
now. When we accept another person's idea of what we should
be doing with our lives, instead of what we want to be doing with
our lives, we are off course. As soon as we achieve a goal
that belongs to someone else, we feel the lack of satisfaction
that goes with it and we are unhappy. And, we remain
unhappy until we put ourselves back on course.
Whether you are a physics student with
cartoons in your laboratory notebook or a cartoonist with physics
equations on your sketch pad, you are off course with your
life. Too many people dream of doing one thing while
actually doing another, all the while yearning inside for the
courage to express who they really are to the world.
Many people fear leaving jobs they don't
like to do something they really do like. Their jobs often
represent financial security. To take care of their
physical needs, they ignore their mental, emotional and spiritual
needs daily by slowly suffocating their souls. If your
objective for a job is really only money, I could suggest many
other job possibilities which would pay more than the job you
have accepted (perhaps "money" is really not your
objective!). These people must generate a tremendous amount
of "motivation" or Positive Thinking to get up
each morning and force their unwilling bodies through another day
of trying to do what they really don't want to do.
It should be no surprise that so many people
miss so many days of "work" due to real and imaginary
illness as well as various dysfunctional behaviors. Nor
should it be surprising that the quality of so many products and
services are less than acceptable. And these people are not
much fun to be around at the end of a day of trying to do what
they really don't like! You can understand how businesses
waste millions of dollars each year trying to motivate their
people to perform tasks they really don't want to perform:
the will of the human mind and body is an awesome (and expensive)
force to overcome!
The popular belief that anybody can sell
anything to anyone doesn't work either. A sale only occurs
when someone who really believes in a product connects with
someone who really wants the product; everything else is just
manipulation or victim behavior which is disempowering and does
not serve either party. If you are selling anything,
including your own talents, your job is to identify who would
benefit from your product or service, then "sell" to
them. Otherwise, find something else to sell or do!
Our society even glamorizes people who have
made choices which have created pain and poverty in their lives
(sometimes overcoming great personal obstacles) while looking
with suspicion upon anyone who really excels and enjoys life
without undue "effort." In fact, I often hear the
phrase, "level the playing field," when someone does
particularly well. It's as though we should, for example,
attach large weights to the ankles of an outstanding (and tall)
basketball player, penalize someone who creates a proprietary
product everyone wants (and that person does too well) or tax
higher income people at a higher rate (while giving special
rewards to lower income people). That is, we often change
the rules when someone does "too well," trying to
adjust everyone to some lower (and mythical) "average"
person or level of performance, rather than looking for ways to
raise everyone to a new higher standard.
Many associate Living Your Purpose with
self-sacrifice or doing something they have heard is noble.
What's true is that whatever you enjoy most is what really
qualifies as Living Your
Purpose. In truth, you can Live Your Purpose
AND Eliminate Your
Blocks to being paid well for something you
enjoy, rather than rewarding yourself for pain!
Note that the reasons why you don't like your work could also be due to Blocks which you have to being on course with your life or dealing positively with the "requirements" of your work and the challenges of other people. You'll learn to completely Eliminate Your Blocks in Act 3.
Let's explore further what Living Your Purpose is really all about. You're NOT Living Your Purpose, or you are NOT on course with your life, if:
1) You're disappointed that you're
not what you wanted to be when you grew up.
2) You're bored with what you do with
your time: you wouldn't want to do this forever.
3) You'd rather be anywhere else than
where you are.
4) You'd quit your job if they didn't
pay you.
5) Any trained monkey could do what
you do.
6) You watch the clock all day and
lunch is your favorite time of the day.
7) You wear out the floor between the
TV and the refrigerator (or, with the increasing number of home
businesses, between the computer or FAX machine and the
refrigerator).
8) When you look in the mirror, there
is no smile on your face.
Conversely, you're Living Your Purpose, or you are on course with your life, if:
1) You're grinning from ear to ear.
2) You find yourself doing it often,
with or without pay.
3) Time flies while you're going
through your day.
4) Others prosper by what you do.
5) You feel joy, peace, excitement and
satisfaction from what you do.
6) You're doing what you most want to
do.
7) You feel opposition from others
whose lives are not on course.
8) You're 100% committed to what you
do.
Your commitments are your actions! Once you discover what puts a smile on your face, you must live it. This calls for a 100% commitment. The difference between a 100% commitment and a 99% commitment is the difference between Total Success and lack.
Let's take this process a step further with a Soul Search. At this time, this is merely Possibility Thinking, merely being honest with yourself about what your Inner Guidance says would make you happy without any judgment or concern about whether it is right or wrong, good or bad, difficult or easy, serious or silly. Remember, as any child knows, if you don't have an answer, make one up; and, if you don't like your answer, change it.
This is where the power of the written
word comes into play. By writing something on a piece
of paper, you are causing yourself to slow down and focus for a
longer period of time on what you truly desire. Writing
traps the idea in time in a physical form long enough for you to
consider the idea and to revise it as necessary.
Writing also forces you to be much more
specific than you have been previously when you were just letting
ideas float around in your mind where your limiting beliefs could
immediately eliminate them from consideration.
The beauty of the written word is that it
also gets you in touch with your individual inner truth.
You are bombarded constantly with messages from outside
yourself: everyone seems to have a vested interest in what
you "should" want. If you write something that is
someone else's idea for your life, you can't be fooled: you
know you don't really want it. But, if you write something
that you truly desire, even if you haven't a clue how you could
ever experience it, you still can't be fooled: you know you
really want it.
Further, keep your goals private!
Sometimes we are told to share our goals with the world so others
can keep us on course. Unfortunately, most people are too
busy with their own goals to support your goals. And too
many "support groups" focus too much attention on
problems and not enough attention on solutions. Often
people around us have a vested interest in what we do or they
have the same problems we do, so they may not be good support for
our new direction in life. After all, if people around you
were truly supporting your goals, dreams and desires, you'd
already have whatever you wish to have, to do and to be!
Also, you may be considered flaky if you change your mind about a
goal you are really just "testing" and others may not
support you when you are really "serious."
You can experience two unfortunate results
when you share your dreams with others before they can support
you 100% for any reason at all. Because we love to be in
harmony with each other, you may take your attention away from
what you desire and put it on what the other people want for you,
forfeiting your end result. Or, you may attempt to focus
your attention on what you desire as well as on what the other
people want for you, splitting your focus. Since your
mind cannot hold two opposing thoughts at the same time (for
example, you cannot trust and mistrust someone at the same time),
you get mixed results.
However, if you are truly sharing a goal
with a personal or business partner, be sure you both have
the same spoken and unspoken end result in mind.
Therefore, do not share your goals with
anyone unless you know he/she will support you 100% to have
everything you desire.
Now let's have that Soul Search. On a sheet of paper, quickly complete the following sentences with the first thing that pops into your mind that puts a smile on your face:
Number One: "One thing I never get tired of doing, or dreaming of doing, is ..."
EXERCISE 01: complete sentence Number One
Number Two: "If I were not concerned about money, I would immediately begin to ..."
EXERCISE 02: complete sentence Number Two
Number Three: "I am financially independent and I spend one million dollars each month prospering the Planet by ..."
EXERCISE 03: complete sentence Number Three
Number Four: "If I had not made certain commitments, I would immediately ..."
EXERCISE 04: complete sentence Number Four
Number Five: "The most fun thing I can think of doing with my life is ..."
EXERCISE 05: complete sentence Number Five
Next, whether or not what you just wrote is related to what you are about to write, quickly complete the following sentence with the first thing that pops into your mind that puts a smile on your face:
"My Highest Purpose is ..."
EXERCISE 06: complete your Life Purpose Statement
If you are not certain that what you just
wrote is true or false, sleep on these thoughts. When you
awake, take a simple test. Our bodies always tell us the
truth: they are an outer expression of what is going on
inside us. Stand in front of a mirror, look yourself
straight in your eyes and read your statements. You will
always get a swift and truthful response: there's truth in
the old proverb, "A picture is worth a thousand
words."
If you get a frown on your face, take out
your pen or pencil and make up something new. If you get a
smile on your face, and your life is not in accordance with what
you have written, begin moving in this new
direction. In other words, take some empowering action
toward what you think you desire to test whether you
really desire it. As you learn to test each possibility
more quickly, you will move toward expressing your true life
purpose more quickly and benefiting from expressing your true
life purpose more quickly.
EXERCISE 07: complete the previous six statements as appropriate for your family, project, business and/or organization
If your Purpose is not empowering or you have any resistance (Blocks) to Living Your Purpose, simply Eliminate Your Blocks in Act 3.
EXERCISE 08: Read your Life, Family, Project, Business and/or Organization Purpose Statements daily
However, please remember that it is not
someone else's fault when you suddenly decide to be on course
with your life; you may have denied yourself the pleasure of Living Your Purpose
for much of your life to this point. Therefore, it is
important that major changes in Living Your Purpose be made
with consideration for people and institutions that are directly
affected by your actions.
Of course, some people will cheer because
they have been wondering when you were going to get around to
doing what you came here to do and they can begin to support
you. You are the one who loses if you look back on a
life only partially lived, having missed expressing all you
would like to be because you were living someone else's dream
(or, even worse, living what you thought was someone else's dream
when it wasn't!).
EXERCISE 09: begin Living Your Purpose immediately
(Your Inner Guidance will tell you where to begin and what to do.)
